Here's a very desirable variation of the famous Winchester Model 1892 lever action rifle that was once owned by Winchester authority and author George Madis. This is an original and rather rare short-barreled "Baby Carbine" (also known by collectors as a "Trapper" carbine). Chambered for the .38 WCF (.38-40), this carbine was manufactured with a very handy 14-inch barrel.
Overall condition is superior to that of most "Trapper" carbines and while the gun shows some use, it does not show the heavy use and abuse most suffered. The finish is original on both the metal and wood. The sights are correct and original to the carbine.
The stocks are free of cracks, chips or repairs and the wood has never been sanded or refinished. This little carbine weighs a very handy 5-pounds, 3-ounces. Mechanically, this Winchester functions perfectly and the action is crisp and tight. The bore rates excellent and exhibits bright, sharp rifling throughout. In addition to the carbine and documentation, a first edition copy of George Madis' "The Winchester Book" is included. This 639-page hardbound book is a must-have for any Winchester collector. The book is in very good shape and signed by the author. Lastly, an original Winchester .38 WCF hand loading tool, Winchester .38WCF bullet mold, and a vintage (full) box of Western .38 caliber bullets are included!!
