William Walker Marston, W.W. Marston Breech Loading .54 Cal. Rifle

For sale, we presents this William Walker Marston, W.W. Marston Breech-Loading Percussion Rifle. This rifle was manufactured by the W.W Marston of New York City, NY in the mid 1850's. Less than 300 of these rifles, including the shotgun models, were produced. Marston is best known for his pepperboxes, single and multi-barreled percussion and cartridge handguns. Made in a variety of barrel lengths and calibers, this .54 caliber model features a 28" rifled round barrel. Stock is made of bird's eye maple and has some of the original checkering present and a gloss finish with minimal handling marks and a small crack present behind the lever on the underside (Please reference all photos for the condition of the firearm). These rifles were made without a provision for a forend and have a cleaning rod mounted below the barrel. A rich dark brown and blue patina has formed on the barrel and the receiver has developed a light gray and brown patina. Broad scroll factory engraving is visible but worn. None of the factory markings or serial number are visible and there is some pitting on the receiver and a crack forming forward of the charging lever. Hammer locks back into one position, no half cock safety and the trigger releases the hammer correctly. Oxidation is present inside the breech and barrel, but no serious pitting is present. The breech-loading lever doesn't lock into place when the hammer is cocked. Sights are an open rear and front half-blade sight dovetailed into the barrel. There is some scroll work still visible on the top of the metal crescent shaped butt plate. This would make an excellent addition to any collection of early American percussion firearms and is sure to stand out in your collection.
