Here is a seldom encountered rifle made by the Whitney Company known as the Burgess Repeating Rifle. This is designed by both GW Morse and A Burgess and manufactured between 1879 and 1882. Only about 1,500 sporting rifles were made with a total production of about 3,000 from this manufacturer.
This example is in very good condition for its age cosmetically and in excellent mechanical condition. In fact, the consignee says that this is a fantastic shooter. The octagonal barrel measures about 28" and the bore is surprisingly fine - mostly bright as well shiny with strong rifling and minimal frost. These examples generally see heavy use and I have only seen 2 of these during my career of selling antique and collectible firearms.
