Up for sale is a used, antique US Springfield Model 1871 rolling block single shot rifle chambered in 50-70 Govt. Barrel measures 36" in length with a moderately bright, strong, frosted good bore with scattered light pitting and a few isolated heavier pits. Barrel, barrel band, breech block, hammer, trigger and buttplate have been cleaned to bare at some point and have toned to a bright gray patina with pinprick pitting, older staining and a layer of now flaking dried varnish over much of the surface. Receiver retains about 85% thinning case color with some areas of freckled staining, along with some older rust on the right side of the receiver and the eagle on the right side is mostly worn away. Receiver also shows a layer of now flaking varnish as well.
Rifle is sighted with a wedge shaped front blade and a two position rear notch which is extremely stiff. Left side of the receiver is clearly marked "Model 1871" and the right side is marked "US/Springfield/1872", but the eagle is worn away. Left side of the wrist area is marked with Erskine Allens inspection mark in an oval and "15" is stamped at the heel of the comb. The breech block locks up well.
