Model 1836 percussion conversion pistol made circa 1843 in Middletown, Connecticut by Robert Johnson. This pistol would have started out as a flintlock and was converted to the more reliable percussion firing system sometime after that. The lock is marked “US / JOHNSON / MIDDN.CONN. / 1843”. The “P” proof mark on the left side of the barrel is visible and what appears to be the inspector's initials “JH” above the “P” and the “US” above the “JH” are faintly visible. The trigger guard and the barrel both have the serif “H” inspection stamp and there are two cartouches on the left side of the stock. The first cartouche is that of the sub-inspector Joseph Hannis (a civilian Ordnance Department inspector of contract arms). The second cartouche is that of the final inspector, Captain William Anderson Thornton. There is a thin crack in the left stock flat emanating from the lock screw, which is stable.
