Offered for purchase is a U.S. Springfield Armory Trapdoor Cadet rifle, Model of 1884. This example has numerous stock carvings . Stock maintains a decent finish, with typical dents and dings for a rifle of this age.
The stock cartouche is present, but I cannot quite make the year out. Given the serial number of this rifle, 440117, and the manufacture year of 1889, I believe the cartouche says 1890, but as I said, I am not sure. While this rifle is not mentioned by serial number on the Springfield Research Service list, the serial number falls in the middle of a large block of rifles that was shipped to Texas A&M University. Given the serial number, I would venture to say that this rifle was also part of that batch. The breech block functions as it should, and locks up tight..
The bore on this example is bright with good rifling. Chambered in .45-70. Overall, this rifle shows use, but is an honest example of a Trapdoor Cadet rifle that is potentially identifiable to a university. As with anything, the pictures tell the best story.
