U.S. Model 1836 Robert Johnson flintlock pistol made in 1842.
The left side of the stock has two inspection cartouches. The first cartouche is “JCB” (Joseph C. Bragg). Bragg was an Ordnance Inspector operating out of Springfield Armory. He inspected contract arms from 1837 to 1855, when he left the Ordnance Department to work at Colt for better pay. The second cartouche is “WAT” (chief inspector of contract arms, Brevet Brigadier General William A. Thornton). General Thornton inspected arms from the late 1830s through the Civil War. On the left flat, towards the rear of the barrel, is a serif “B” inspection stamp. The left rear of the barrel is stamped “U.S.” over “JH” (the initials of Joseph Hannis, who was a civilian Ordnance Department inspector of contract arms) over “P”. The bottom of the barrel has another Joseph Hannis “JH” inspection stamp as well as matching “T” and “F” assembly stamps.
