This is a Springfield Model 1884 Trapdoor rifle in 45-70 Government caliber. There were around 232,500 combined production 1884 rifles, carbines and cadet rifle variations made. The serial number ranges of all types 1884 fall within the 300,000 to 500,000 range. The serial number is 321,502.
The condition of this 1884 rifle is Very Good. (1) The rifle is in the correct configuration. (2) The metal parts appear to be all original finish. (3) The barrel bluing is mostly brown on exposed parts. It has not been refinished. The barrel is original blue
(3) The blued finish on the hammer and two piece trigger guard is a grey blue. (4) The blued finish on the butt has gone to a more brown finish with some rust. (5) The locks work fine. (6) The bore is very good, bright and shiny with just a few shallow pits in a few spots. (7) The black walnut stock is “GOOD” with handling marks. There is a crack at the wrist behind the lock plate. There is no evidence of the stock cartouche. There is a layer of arsenal finish added over the years and it is re-absorbing into the stock in some areas. (8) There are arsenal rack marks “A.2.” painted on stock and stamped on top of butt plate.
Overall a good 1884 rifle with a nice bore.
