This Springfield 1868 Trapdoor rifle features: (1) Caliber is 50 caliber centerfire. (2) Barrel is 32-1/2” with two barrel bands. (2) Lock plate extended out from the stock and has a beveled edge. (3) High arched breech block measures 1-7/8” and is correct. (4) Breech & tang were case colored quenched in oil and have a black deep blued look to them (correct). (5) Long range folding ladder sight (correct). (6) Front sight on lug that serves as a stud for socket type bayonet. (6) Cleaning rod is oval on the end and slotted with five serrations at the end to improve finger hold. (7) The cleaning rod has a cone shaped piece around 4” down that locks it into the stock. (8) The barrel is turned 2-1/8” into the receiver. (9) Stock is lightly stamped “ESA” in a square cartouche on left side. (10) Comb of stock known as “short stock” is about 9” long. (11) The lock is marked ahead of the hammer “EAGLE and US/SPRINGFIELD”. Locks are dated behind the hammer either 1863 or 1864 (this one is 1864). (12) The high arch breech is stamped on the top front either 1869 or 1870. This one is stamped “1869/Eagle stamping/U.S.”.
(13) The serial number is on the barrel and breech. (14) Civil War barrel bands with “U” stamp.
The condition of this 1868 Allin Trapdoor is Good+ to VG: (1) Metal parts were finished bright (White). (2) The metal parts were arsenal refinished at the time of the conversion. (3) The barrel was blued and
Shows a blue/brown patina. The picture under the barrel bands show the original bluing (see band pics). (4) The case coloring on the breech and top tang were oil quenched and are darker. The coloring on the inside has lost its color. (5) The blued finish on the hammer, barrel bands, side plate and two piece trigger guard is around 60%. (6) The blued finish on the butt is worn to a more brown/grey finish. (7) The locks work fine. (8) The bore is very good, nicely taken care of, bright and shiny . (9) The black walnut stock is Good-VG with handling marks. There are no cracks. There is a layer of arsenal finish added over the years.
Overall a decent 1868 Springfield trapdoor E. Allin 3rd Type conversion rifle with a nice bore. It is an interesting transition gun.
