The Steyr M1895 rifle was developed for the Austrian-Hungarian Imperial Army from a series of earlier rifles, redesigned to accommodate the new 8X50 cartridge loaded with newly developed smokeless powder. It has a unique straight pull bolt that allowed it to be fired more quickly than any other bolt action rifle of the period, and it was used extensively during WWI by Imperial soldiers.
The WWI vintage bayonet is not matched to the rifle. It has a couple of sets of serial numbers stamped on the guard, and the blade is stamped “F.G.G.Y.” for the Hungarian factory of Fegyver es Gepgyar. This mark was stamped on Hungarian made bayonets from 1891 to 1918.
The metal parts of the rifle are in very nice condition. The barrel is coated in cosmoline and well preserved – I did not clean it from the barrel, the outside of the receiver or the inside of the wood. The bore is shiny and has sharp rifling. It functions perfectly.
