This is an “antique” Spang & Wallace, percussion ignition, muzzle loading, back action, double barrel, and double hammer shotgun in 10 Bore. The barrels are 32” long and made with Damascus “London Fine Twist” steel.
This Spang & Wallace Fowling 10 Bore features: (1) Muzzle Loading percussion ignition black powder shotgun. (2) Double hammer Back-action style lock action. (3) 32” barrels with wide 7/16” bowed style solid top rib. Brass front blade. Barrels have three ramrod pipes and slotted early ramrod. (4) Barrels are marked “London / Fine - Twist” on top rib. Barrels are numbered “2019” on bottom rib & each barrel. Barrels have Birmingham proofs. Early adopted 1813 proofed “crown/crossed swords/V” and “crown /crossed swords/BPC” (see pictures). (5) Matching two stage hammers with light engraving. (6) Back Action has engraved long top tang and the side plates are both engraved with game birds (pheasants) and scroll engraving with border (see pics). (7) Steel trigger guard with game bird and scroll work. Trigger guard has long front & rear tangs, engraved, and well fitted (see pictures). (8) Walnut stocked with straight grip, silver inlet initial plate, inlet percussion cap box & silver push pin lock fitting. There is an engraved steel forearm cap with tang (pics). (9) Shotgun style steel butt plate with long top tang and mild engraving. (10) Fine cut checkering on grip. (11) Both side plates are stamped “Spang &/Wallace/Phila”. (12) Gun weighs in at 8 pounds 2 ounces empty.
This double gun measures: (1) LOP: 13-1/4”. (2) Drop at comb front: 2”. (3) Drop at comb center: 2-1/4”. (4) Drop at heel: 2-5/8”. (5) There is very light cast off at the heel. (6) Barrels are “well made” and have silver inlays at rear. (7) The right barrel choke is .754 and the left barrel choke is .750.
They were very well taken care of. (2) All of the action, trigger guard, hammers, side lock and other metal parts are original finish. Most of those parts are a more faded blue/grey. (3) Stock wood to metal fit is excellent and solid. There are no signs of the stock being sanded in all these areas. The finish is absorbed into the wood on all this area. (4) It appears the stock was not re-finished, it just had finish added. (5) The stock is on rock solid with no movement.
The condition of this Spang & Wallace 10 bore is Good+ to VG: (1) Barrel metal finish is all original. It has turned to a grey/brown patina. There are no barrel dings or significant issues. The inside bores & chambers are in VG+ to excellent condition. There are no signs of pitting or rust.
This is a nice early American made 1845- 1857 era Spang & Wallace engraved 10 Bore fowling double gun with excellent bores and chambers.
