This Pattern 1861 Enfield was originally built in 1867 at the Tower of London. It was later converted to fire a .58 rimfire cartridge. The Mont Storm method of conversion was used. It is now a converted Model 1861 Trapdoor.
The rifle has clear markings on the lockplate and distinctive Japanese stampings on the top rear of the barrel. The Japanese markings indicate that this rifle may have been used during the Meiji Renovation (Meiji Revolution) which was a political event that restored practical imperial rule to Japan in 1868 under Emperor Meiji. It may have been used during or just after the Boshin War which was a civil war in Japan fought from 1868 to 1869 between forces of the ruling Tokugawa shogunate and a coalition seeking to seize political power in the name of the Imperial Court.
The scarce Mont Storm conversion and the rare Japanese markings make this an ideal rifle for a collector of antique military arms.
