Up for sale is an antique flintlock muzzle loader in 45 caliber. Octagon barrel measures 35" to the flash hole with a marginally bright, frosted bore with scattered light to moderate pitting and only some traces of faintly visible rifling. Barrel and lock have mostly toned to shades of brown-gray patina with areas of staining, scratches, high edge wear, handling marks and some scattered pinprick pitting and the lock appears to have been scrubbed of any makers markings. Brass hardware has toned to shades of ochre patina with assorted handling marks and a few stains while the patchbox lid has a shallow dent with some slight warping and some verdigris developing on the inside. Flintlock is sighted with a low dovetailed brass front blade and dovetailed rear notch. Full length wood stock shows several older repaired or partially repaired cracks along its length with a repaired complete split at the wrist with rectangular repairs on either side. Stock also shows scattered handling marks with older added finish that is starting to thin in a few areas and there are some shallow slivers of missing wood around the upper tang. Top barrel flat is marked “Belles” in script with a illegible letter and small character just ahead of that and as stated, the lock no longer shows any makers information. Right side of the wrist ahead of the repair is stamped “B257”.
Possibly by Peter Belles but we have no way to confirm that so please look very carefully at the photos and make your own decision
