This is a Model 1842 H. Aston (Henry Aston) made circa 1849 in good condition. Barrel is stamped “US/JH/P” on the left side and “1849” on the top. The left flat of the barrel is stamped “SK” and the tang is stamped “K” in front of trigger guard. The lock is stamped “US/H. Aston” and “MIDD TN/CONN./1849”. There are two cartouches, “JH” (Joseph Hannis) and “WAT” (Capt. William Anderson Thornton). One of the screws on the left side of the gun looks like it is a replacement.
The Model 1842 is almost identical to the Model 1836, with the obvious exception of its percussion nipple and lock. In addition, unlike the Model 1836, the Model 1842 used precisely gauged, interchangeable parts.
