This is an early London proofed Edward Bond (1730-1790) Flintlock Musket in .790 smooth bore.
This Edward Bond Short Flintlock Musket features: (1) 38” smooth bore barrel in .790 bore. Most private master gunsmith loyalist guns were 42” barrel versions. This barrel has the London proofs: “Crown/V” first rough proofing and the “Crown/GP” gun maker’s final proof. (2) Brown Bess pattern brass trigger guard. (3) Brass Bess dragoon pattern butt plate. (4) Brass flash hole. (5) Brass ramrod fittings and stock cap. (6) The ramrod is iron and is 37-3/4” long. (7) The stock is walnut with no markings or cartouches visible. (8) Stock has the flat topped 8.5” long comb.
The stock has had finish added over the years. There are no significant gouges and no visible cracks. The fit on the stock butt is proud. The fit on all of the brass fittings is excellent. The “E. BOND” lock plate metal fit is very good. There are no visible proofs or markings on the wood (see pics). (4) The lock is cast iron with all original parts including the leather flint wrapping. The flint looks to be a replacement. The inside lock has a scribe “I 444”. It has unknown origin. (5) The hammer function is strong. Two positions both strong. (6) The frizzen has a nice tight fit.
The condition of this Infantry Musket is Good+ -VG: (1) The barrel is 38” long browned/grey/blued color with smooth finish. The barrel is better than average for this age musket. (2) The inside bore is Good -Good+. It has shine with medium pitting most of the barrel. It is not rusty with clean insides entirely.
