LC Smith Baker Double – serial number 7513 – manufactured between 1878-1884. The barrel rib is marked: L.C. SMITH MAKER OF BAKER GUNS, SYRACUSE, N.Y. STUB TWIST.
ALL serial numbers match; receiver, barrels, forend wood & metal
This old timer was recently acquired from a family where it has been passed down from generation to generation, the last one got it from his father 30 years ago!
Mechanically it functions as designed; it opens & closes easily - it locks up tight - hammers hold cocked position & fall when the triggers are pulled – the bores have minor corrosion & a couple of small dings. This is a blackpowder gun with Damascus barrels that is over 140.
The stocks are checkered with a Prince of Wales grip – sharply fluted – steel butt plate with “widows peak” – forend has an ebony tip. They present well for an antique shotgun but have a few old cracks, repairs & the checkering is seen more than felt.
The metal is mostly Patina & has not been “over-cleaned” - it has that “old gun look” but will clean up much better if you feel the need. The barrel address is faint & not completely legible – all other stampings are still strong.
LC Smith Baker Doubles were High End & very expensive at the time of production. They are highly sought after by collectors in any quality or condition, as quoted from The Blue Book of Gun Values.
