This Sharps was originally manufactured in 1863-1865 as a percussion carbine for use in the Civil War, and was one of 31,098 carbines returned by the U.S. Government to Sharps Rifle Manufacturing Co. in 1867, who received a contract for refurbishment and alteration of their guns for use with metallic cartridges.
Marked on top of barrel near breach, “NEW MODEL 1859”. Right side of receiver is marked “C. SHARPS’ PAT OCT. 5TH 1852.” and above right of this is marked, “R.S. LAWRENCE’ PAT APRIL 12TH 1859.” There is the letter “C” on the upper left side of the receiver.
This example features a sleeved barrel with three-groove rifling done at the time of alteration, and standard markings and features. Script "ET" oval inspection cartouche stamped on the left wrist and "DFC" (David F. Clark) ribbon cartouche on the left center of the buttstock. Brass blade front sight and Lawrence patent notch/folding ladder rear sight graduated from 200 to 800 yards.
Retains 85% arsenal refurbished blue finish on the barrel, and arsenal refurbished case hardened barrel band, receiver, lever, hammer and buttplate, visible mostly in protected areas with smooth brown and gray patina on the balance and some scattered light freckling and surface corrosion. Wood is also fine as re-oiled, with defined edges, some scattered scratches, and visible cartouches. Excellent bore with very strong, sharp rifling. The mechanics function flawlessly. Serial number 86221.
