Offered for purchase is a Pattern 1853 Enfield. This example has a lock date of 1862, with a Crown stamp, sans VR. This Enfield has been converted post-Civil War for civilian use as a shotgun by cutting the stock and shortening the barrel. As the photos show, this example shows hard use and almost certainly saw use during the Civil War. Metal has pitting in most areas, and stock has gauges and scuffs.
This example bears the Sinclair, Hamilton and Company mark under the wrist, which almost guarantees that this example was purchased by the Confederacy for use during the American Civil War. Based on the conversion to a shotgun, I would imagine that the Confederate soldier who likely carried this gun took it home after the war and used it to provide for food. While this Enfield is rough, it is an excellent piece of American history, and is being offered for a fraction of the cost of a complete, unmodified Sinclair/Hamilton marked Enfield.
