These were used during the American Civil War, mostly by Union troops, but certainly some were captured and found their way into Confederate hands. Metal retains a pleasing patina overall with some light pitting and minor surface rust, having been cleaned a long time ago. Brass mountings have a pleasing color to them. The hammer holds at full cock, strong spring.
Markings are clear. The rear sight on the barrel looks like it was resoldered a long time ago, certainly the correct rear sight. Wood has some dings and handling marks. Bore is dirty with good rifling and some pitting. The ramrod appears to be a reproduction. 34 inch barrel. Long bayonet lug on the right side of the barrel. A very attractive looking item. Made in Liege Belgium by PJ MALHERBE & CO and so marked on the lock. A good solid Civil War import rifle.
