Antique Production Charles Daly Drilling – borderline & scroll engraving, top of the receiver is extensively fine checkered. 12ga/12ga over .32-40 - 28” barrels Marked: Fine Damacus Barrels. It was manufactured in Prussia by Sauer & Sohns for Charles Daly, sold in the US market. Based on the lack of proof-marks & not being stamped Prussia, this was made prior to 1891. There are no Nitro, gauge, choke or caliber markings.
It has an under-lever release – rabbit ear hammers for the shotgun barrels – a top lever switches to the rifle barrel & is fired by the right hammer. My choke gauge indicates Full & Extra Full – chambers are shorter than 2 ¾”. The bore measures .32 caliber & the .32-40 is the only cartridge that fits in the chamber – we have not done a chamber cast & will leave that up to the next owner to verify. It has a rear sight & a tang sight that both fold out of the way when not used & it has a short blade front sight.
Mechanical Bench Test Assessment; it functions as designed – positive hammer lock - locks up tight – nice trigger pulls - all barrels fire & with strong firing pin strikes – shotgun bores are bright & shiny with only minor imperfections – no major dings – rifle bore is bright & shiny with strong pronounced rifling; Excellent Condition. No damage or extensive wear is present – no issues found.
The shotgun barrel has a matted rib – attractive Damacus pattern & have a “browned” finish. Less than expected finish loss for a firearm this old. It has some stains, minor handling marks & pin-head pitting found upon up-close inspection. There are no rust issues. I didn’t want to clean it further & disrupt the Patina but it will clean up better if you feel the need.
It has walnut stocks; fine checkering - sharp fluted comb – round knob pistol grip – hard rubber butt plate – LOP is 13 7/8” to the forward trigger. There are no cracks or repairs just handling marks, the checkering is seen more than felt & the forearm has a few small chips missing.
This is a fine example of a quality made Charles Daly Drilling that has been well cared for & preserved for over 135 years.
