Here we present an antique James Beattie English Double Action Percussion Revolver, made circa the late 1850s to the early 1860s in London, England. James Beattie was a small arms manufacturer working in London between 1849 and 1879.
This is a 6-shot .28 caliber double action only revolver. The front of the cylinder shows each chamber being numbered which would have been of use for loading. The top of the barrel reads “J. BEATTIE / 205 REGENT StT / LONDON”. He was at this address between 1851 through 1882. This revolver features gorgeous engraving throughout with tight scrolls with a fine line background. The fitted case is original and velvet-lined. In addition to the Beattie label on the inside of the case lid, there is an ownership card for Mr. J.R.B. Masefield of Rosehill, Cheadle, Staffordshire. John Richard Beech Masefield (1850-1932) was born in Stone and lived at Old Hall with his family. He was a career solicitor, though it seems his real passion lay out of doors. He was a student of nature and wrote and lectured on the local flora and fauna. He joined the North Staffordshire Field Club in 1883 and he helped to establish the Hawksmoor Nature Reserve. There is also a receipt that appears to be from 1922 from Army & Navy Stores, Limited located at 105 Victoria Street, Westminster, SW1. Contained within is the following: suede waterproof pouch of percussion caps by Eley, powder flask, nipple wrench, cleaning rod, lead ball, and single cavity bullet mold. All accouterments are in fine condition.
The overall condition is fine. Original blue finish. The engraving remains sharp. The action is smooth and excellent. The bore is clean with sharp rifling. The grip is solid and hand-checkered. The case is in fine condition. This set is a true gem!
Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.
Barrel is 3-1/2 inches.
Caliber: .28 Percussion
