he Winchester 1873 Sporting Carbine, 3rd Model, with serial number 349856B, was manufactured in 1890. This lever-action firearm, chambered in 38 W.C.F (38-40), features a 20-inch barrel and a sporting-length magazine tube. The top of the barrel is marked with "WINCHESTER'S REPEATING ARMS. NEW HAVEN. CONN. U.S.A. // KING'S IMPROVEMENT PATENTED MARCH 29 1866 OCTOBER 16. 1860." It is equipped with a Micro front sight and a semi-buckhorn rear sight with an elevator. The stock is crafted from high-grade, gloss-finish walnut and exhibits excellent wood-to-metal fit, though there is a small chip on the left-hand lower side of the wrist and a small crack on the right-hand lower side.
The crescent buttplate retains its original trapdoor and functions properly. The firearm's metal finish is polished, in-the-white. The bore is gray with frosting, has pronounced rifling, and shows no deep pitting despite its darkened appearance.
Overall, this custom Winchester 1873 presents as a well-executed modification, with a shortened magazine tube and a barrel length similar to carbine models. The magazine tube hanger dovetail shows some marring, but the action cycles correctly, indicating good mechanical condition.
