Up for sale is an antique Smith & Wesson 38 Double Action 2nd Model top break revolver chambered in 38 S&W. Round ribbed barrel measures 3 ¼” in length with a bright, strong near very good bore aside from a few scattered pits. Revolver retains about 30% original blued finish with the balance having toned to shades of brown and gray patina with freckling, older staining and handing marks. Hammer and trigger still retain some patches of fair case color although the balance has toned to gray patina. Factory marbled red and black hard rubber grips show some lightly worn points in the checkering and there is a hard to see crack at the bottom of the right panel. Revolver is sighted with a pinned front blade and notch rear built into the barrel latch. Action is sluggish at times and sometimes pops out of timing on one chamber but cylinder lock up and barrel to frame fit and lockup appear good.
Frame, cylinder and barrel latch show matching numbers and the grips are not marked. Included with the revolver is a period hinged cardboard box that appears to be numbered to different gun and a factory S&W letter indicating the revolver was shipped in 1880 in this configuration.
