Antique JH Johnston Great American Gun Works marked black powder percussion rifle in about 40 caliber. Octagon barrel measures 26 ¾" to the nipple bolster with a marginally bright, frosted bore with fine pitting along most of its length with only a couple areas of visible rifling. Barrel and lock have mostly toned to shades of brown and gray patina with older staining, pitting and assorted marks while the brass hardware has toned to shades of patina with some stains and scratches. Wood halfstock has been sanded and refinished at some point and shows a large repaired crack running along the right side starting behind the lock and running to the nose cap, along with a mark mimicking a crack on the left side of the forend and there is the impression of a barrel band on either side of the forend that is no longer present. Rifle is sighted with a rough German silver dovetail front blade and a dovetail notch rear. Lock is not marked but the top barrel flat is marked “JH Johnston” and “Great American Gun Works Pittsburgh, PA”.
