For sale is a J.H. Johnston Great Western Gun Works percussion rifle. It is silver mounted and has an unusually long barrel. The bore looks to be .36 caliber. It has a Goucher lock with a bird dog and quail engraved on it. The barrel, from the breech to the muzzle is 46 inches long. The rifle is in impeccable condition. There is no pitting about the lock, nipple and hammer, and the gun was fired little if at all. Johnston advertised “varnished barrels”, and most of the varnish is still present. The bore is bright and shiny, I don’t have a bore gauge, but a the bore measures approximately 3/8”. Case colring on the rifle is excellent.
I really can’t imagine a gun of this vintage in finer condition. Being silver -mounted makes it a custom gun as does the longer barrel. From a couple feet away, it looks like a new gun. The ramrod is missing, so you’ll have to fashion another. You would be hard pressed to find another rifle in this shape. It’s a truly special gun.
