Up for auction we have an antique Allen & Wheelock Large Frame Double Action Percussion Revolver in .32 Caliber, made circa the late 1850s in Worcester, Massachusetts. Only 500 of these revolvers thought made in all of the large frame variants this one being serial number 96. This is a very nice example of a transitional revolver, linking Allen’s earlier pepperboxes—revolvers in which each chamber in the cylinder has its own barrel—with his later revolvers that featured a single barrel and what we now consider a conventional cylinder.
This is one of the very scarce early models with the threaded cylinder pin, along with excellent markings including a deep, crisp cylinder scene depicting hunting dogs giving chase to deer. The hammer is marked with Allen’s 1845 patent date. The cylinder is 1-5/8 inches in length as opposed to his medium or small frame revolvers. This pistol is in overall good shape showing its signs of age and wear proudly, the metal has developed a nice patina and the grips show no cracks or breaks, the bore still has strong rifling with no pitting.
This is a beautiful example of an early production transitional revolver from Allen and Wheelock, if you are looking to add to your blackpowder collection or just want to add a cool piece of firearm history don't miss the opportunity
