This revolver is an antique Colt “Open Top” .22 Rimfire (Short, Black Powder), made in 1877 in Hartford, Connecticut. A single action revolver, this small pocket revolver was one of a number of inexpensive handguns produced by Colt from 1871 to 1877. The “Open Top” pocket revolver was one of Colt’s first production model handguns chambered for .22 caliber. This revolver utilized a .22 caliber cartridge matched to a 7-shot smooth cylinder fitted to a 2 3/8” long round barrel. Thousands of the .22 calibers were produced, and the “Open Top” pocket revolver was successful for a time. The Colt “Open Top” Pocket Revolver was one of the early metallic cartridge, rear-loading revolvers manufactured by Colt.
